Singapore gunning for all three points

Singapore kick off their defence of the AFF Suzuki Cup when they face Cambodia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Friday.

The defending champions have not had the best run up to the tournament but Coach Radojko Avramovic believes it is important to win the first game to set the tune for the rest of the tournament.

“Psychologically it is important to win the first game as we head to the rest of our group games. It is vital to play positive football in this first game.

With only two friendlies prior to the start of the tournament, it has not been the ideal preparation for the Lions.

But with majority of the squad featuring in the last two tournament wins, Singapore head into Friday’s match as formidable opponents to Myanmar. Myanmar’s history in the tournament is nothing to crow about as they have only been to the knock out stage only once in 2004 where they were beaten by the Lions in a memorable match at the National Stadium.

None the less Cambodia is not going to make it easy for the Lions as they will look to lift their game up against the defending champions.

“Our target is to be successful this year. We have worked hard to prepare for this tournament and we will make the best of our opportunities,” said Coach Prak Sovonnara

“I realise it will be difficult against strong teams like Singapore. We have some new players like Khim Borey who have great potential and these players are the future of Cambodian football. We have come here not to lose, our aim here is clear, we want to to be successful.” Added Coach Prak Sovannara

In the qualifying round of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2008 in Phnom Penh, Borey scored three goals in four games as he helped the Cambodians qualify for the finals.

Coach Avramovic is prepared for what the Cambodian will throw at the Singapore team.

“Cambodia will play 200% more than what they can as this will be the first game and against the defending champions and it is only a question of how they can cope with 3 games in 6 days. They had a good score in their last game and we are aware of what they are capable of.

“We must try to dictate game and achieve what we want and get the three points.
